For 2026, Formula 1 is entering one of the biggest technical revolutions in its history β€” and one of the key targets of the new FIA regulations is weight reduction. The cars are now 20 centimetres shorter, 10 centimetres narrower, and 30 kilograms lighter than in 2025. The goal? Make the cars more agile, improve overtaking, and deliver better racing after years of complaints about cars being too heavy and too large.

For teams, though, removing 30 kilograms from a modern F1 car is an enormous challenge. It requires a complete rethink of the entire concept β€” from chassis layout to materials and integration. Ferrari, however, appears to have handled this challenge extremely well. The SF-26 was presented already very close to the new minimum weight limit of 770 kilograms β€” a significant achievement, especially when compared to rivals like Aston Martin, which is reportedly around 40 kilograms overweight.

Ferrari’s Deputy Chief Designer, Corrado Onorato, explained that 2026 represents one of the biggest revolutions ever, with smaller, lighter cars, low-drag aerodynamics and active aero systems designed to maintain similar performance levels under the new power unit regulations.

He stressed that because removing 30 kilograms is so difficult, weight becomes a major performance differentiator. Ferrari therefore focused on new materials and, above all, strong integration between the car and the power unit β€” with lap time optimisation as the ultimate priority. In 2026, every kilogram matters β€” and Ferrari may already have gained an early advantage.
